The federal government has announced an investment of $10.65 million towards the upgrade of the Sutherlands Park Sporting and Recreational Precinct in Huntingdale, which will see the construction of new multi-purpose community rooms.

The Sutherlands Park Centre will replace aged infrastructure at the park and feature new changing rooms, sporting and catering spaces, accessible public tiered seating, modern toilet amenities, and outdoor areas available for hire.

The new facility will be located between the existing All Abilities Playground and the Youth Entertainment Space (YES), which is currently under construction.

It will predominantly serve sports on Reserve A, but will also be available for use by all Sutherlands Park sporting clubs and the wider community for functions and events.

As Sutherlands Park was originally developed in the 1970s, when the City of Gosnells’ population was around 20,000 and has since grown to over 133,000, Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes welcomes the ‘much-needed funding,’ noting that ‘more than 1,800 sports participants currently use the precinct each year,’ reflecting the increasing demand for modernised facilities.

“The City is pleased to receive this funding for the Sutherlands Park Sporting and Recreational Precinct, which will help deliver the next stage of the Sutherlands Park Master Plan,” Mayor Lynes said.

“It will help provide essential infrastructure for the next generation of sports participants as well as improving the amenity of the area and creating recreational opportunities for the broader community.”

The funding for the community centre is part of the federal government’s Thriving Suburbs Program, which saw $79 million allocated to 13 community infrastructure projects across Western Australia last week.

The program aims to enhance liveability, strengthen social cohesion, and support local amenities in urban, suburban, and rural communities.

Federal Member for Burt Matt Keogh said he was thrilled to see this funding flowing through to local priorities, taking them off the vision board and making them a reality.

“I thank the City of Gosnells for their advocacy on this project and look forward to seeing the benefits the redevelopment will provide to the community,” Mr Keogh said.

“I’m proud to be delivering this investment in the Sutherlands Park precinct redevelopment and look forward to continuing to work with the City of Gosnells on the SPLASH project.”

The City of Gosnells is now in the process of finding an architect to complete the detailed design of the Sutherlands Park Centre, expected in 2025, with construction expected to follow shortly thereafter.
