Twenty-one-year-old Lloyd Allen from Parkwood is one of just four Curtin University students to be awarded a prestigious 2025 New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship, allowing him to take his studies overseas.

The New Colombo Plan is an Australian Government program designed to increase knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia and strengthen ties between the two regions by supporting students to study, learn languages, and complete internships.

Allen, who is studying a Bachelor of Arts and Commerce with a Japanese Double Degree Major, will spend time at Kobe University in Japan.

He believes the achievement reflects years of preparation and the invaluable experiences that have shaped his journey and he is deeply honoured to receive the NCP Scholarship for 2025.

“In Japan, I will complete my Honours in Economics, focusing on labour mobility trends and exploring how Japan and Australia can enhance mutual trade relationships,” he said.

“I look forward to applying the knowledge and connections I gain to strengthen Australia-Japan relations and sharing my passion for this very special relationship with peers, professionals and the broader community.”

The other three winners are Elliott Mitchell from North Fremantle, who will study at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore; Julian Tearney from Padbury, also heading to Nanyang Technological University in Singapore; and Jasmine Trinh from Bedford, who will study at Seoul National University in South Korea.

Vice-Chancellor of Curtin University, Professor Harlene Hayne, offered her congratulations to the scholars for their outstanding achievement.

“Being awarded a New Colombo Plan Scholarship is a testament to the academic excellence and leadership potential of these talented young people,” Professor Hayne said.

“These scholarships will allow Lloyd, Elliott, Julian and Jasmine to broaden their horizons, foster connections and contribute to deepening Australia’s ties with our regional neighbours.

“I look forward to seeing the impact they will undoubtedly make and wish them every success in this exciting chapter of their lives.”
