The $9 million new Station Street Bridge over the Canning River in Gosnells is taking shape and is on track for completion by mid-2025.
The new dual-lane Station Street Bridge is set to replace the single-lane Cargeeg Bridge, which was built in 1939 and previously served over 4,000 vehicles daily, primarily as the main access street to Lumen Christi College and Martin.
Construction on the new bridge began in August last year, and once completed, the old Cargeeg Bridge will re-open as a pedestrian crossing only.
According to Main Roads WA, construction is now actively focused on final piling works, abutments, and retaining walls, and soon, the concrete bridge deck will be installed.
Since the bridge underwent repairs and closed for heavy vehicles in 2018, increasing the load limit and allowing heavy vehicles to use the bridge once again, questions have since been raised by locals regarding the necessity of the new bridge.
Additionally, there was some opposition to the project due to the removal of several elderly trees to make way for the new structure.
According to Main Roads WA, the new bridge is needed as it will improve traffic flow and safety in the area.
“With only a single lane available over the river, road users currently experience long delays while they wait for traffic to cross in the opposing direction,” they said.
“In addition, the holding bays at each end of the existing bridge have limited capacity, impacting the efficiency and safety of the single lane arrangement.”
The Station Street Bridge project is being jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program ($4.5 million), the WA State Government ($3.5 million), and the City of Gosnells ($1 million).
