Portcullis Park is one of four reserves in Willetton set to benefit from the $92,678 grant.

In collaboration with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) and the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA), the City of Canning has been awarded an allocation of $92,678 to enhance local green spaces and increase its tree canopy coverage.

The City of Canning is using the funding to green four recreation parks in Willetton, including Portcullis Park, Bellona Walk, Kennon Park, and Hilltop Park.

The funding is part of the third round of the Urban Greening Grant Program, which has provided a total of $3.75 million to support additional tree and understorey planting across 33 local governments in the Perth and Peel regions.

Of the grants, Round Three saw $1.6 million awarded across 16 local governments, which will see more than 5,400 trees and 238,700 understorey species planted during winter 2025.

In addition to increasing tree and plant canopy coverage, the City said they aim to mitigate urban heat island effects, boost biodiversity and connect bushland areas, improve hydrological functions and social amenities, and promote health and well-being with the funding.
