Starting in February, the Cannington and Riverton Leisureplexes will undergo major renovations, which include closures to the wellness suites and some change rooms.

Starting next month, the City of Canning will be commencing major renovations at the Cannington and Riverton Leisureplexes.

The works are expected to run from February through to September and are aimed at upgrading the facilities as part of the City’s asset renewal program.

At the Cannington Leisureplex, the Wellness Suite, which includes the spa, sauna, and steam room, will be closed from February 3 to July 31 for refurbishments.

The change rooms adjacent to the pool will also be closed during this period, with customers directed to use the toilets and change rooms located at the gym.

Access to the concourse area on the northern side of the 25-metre pool, from the accessible changeroom to the end of the pool, will also be limited due to the demolition and refurbishment works.

At the Riverton Leisureplex, the Wellness Suite will also be closed for an extended period, from February 3 to mid-June, for refurbishments, including the installation of a new Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system.

Access to the gym change rooms will also be closed, but customers will be able to use the change rooms at the pool deck and Bill Cole Function Centre.

Additionally, at the Riverton Leisureplex, the Women’s and Family change rooms will be closed from February 3 to mid-May for major renovations, with customers directed to use the change rooms at the Bill Cole Function Centre.

The upgrades at the two leisure centres are the first significant renovations since their opening, with Riverton Leisureplex having opened in 2001 and Cannington Leisureplex in 2012.

The Cannington Leisureplex’s Wellness Suite will be closed from February 3 to July 31.

According to the City of Canning, the renovations are necessary due to the age of the centres, which welcome over 1.5 million visitors per year.

“The Leisure Centres are approaching 25 years of age and require a fair amount of renovation work to keep them at a standard expected by the community,” the City stated.

“We understand there will be an inconvenience, but we are ultimately working to improve the experience for our customers.”

While the Program Pool at Riverton is closed, all parent and baby classes will be moved to the Leisure Pool.

Due to the extended closure of the Wellness Suites, affected members will have the option to change or suspend their membership at no cost; however, no compensation will be offered during this period, according to the City of Canning.
