The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale has welcomed the announcement that a re-elected Cook Labor Government will commit $5 million towards the planned Jarrahdale Trails Centre.
Stage One of the Jarrahdale Trails Centre will include a visitor information centre, café, retail, and public amenities.
It is hoped the unique leaf-shaped building will help position Jarrahdale as a globally recognised tourism destination.
But the funding is not a done deal – it is determinant on a Labor victory in March.
So, the shire is now calling on the WA Liberal Party and WA National Party to also commit to the project.
“This project is essential to diversify the local economy, create jobs for local people and give local businesses a boost,” Shire President Rob Coales said.
Of course, $5 million would be a huge boon for the shire and this project, but the estimated cost of Stage 1 of the Jarrahdale Trails Centre is actually double that.
With a second election due in the coming months, the shire is also seeking Federal Government funding towards the Jarrahdale Trails Centre.
“We are calling on all major political parties and candidates contesting the Federal Government election to commit $5 million towards the Jarrahdale Trails Centre,” President Coales said.
“The construction of the trails centre will become a hub for locals and visitors alike, to get the best out of visiting the area, and will enhance the shire’s liveability.”
In addition to the promised $5 million for the Jarrahdale Trails Centre, Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti also made a re-election commitment to fund a new walking and cycling path from Serpentine into the national park.
“We know that by encouraging people to visit these sites, it means more visitors to our regions, which will support local jobs and businesses and help to diversify our economy,” she said.
