The Jarrahdale Heritage Society will open the walking season on Saturday with a ghost walk centred on a prominent local family who emigrated from England to the timber town.

Society president Di Henniker said walkers will learn about working and family life in the 1920s through the eyes of the Moore family.

The story came from information passed on from former Jarrahdale resident Milton Moore, who had been a good friend to the society.

“He was actually born in Jarrahdale in about 1915 or 1916 and his father was an engine driver here, having migrated from England in 1911,” she said.

“He stayed in Jarrahdale until 1933 but his dad went off to war and came back in that time.

“So we’re just looking at all the little things they did and the scenes from their lives.

“At the very end we have them leaving Jarrahdale because the mills closed and there was a depression.”

Ms Henniker said the scenes would be re-enacted by volunteer actors at different points of the walking trail and the Heritage Choir would perform part of the closing scene.

While actors were mostly from the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, there was also a young group from Mandurah.

“We’ve got quite a lot of youngsters this year,” she said.

Walkers can bring a picnic or enjoy a sausage sizzle for $3.

Donations of $5 are requested for adult walkers and $2 for children.

Walkers should also bring a torch and sturdy, closed in walking shoes.

Registrations will be taken at the Bruno Gianatti Hall at the corner of Munro and Jarrahdale roads from 6pm.

Small groups will start the walk from 7pm.
