In a nod to her aspiration to become the next Member for Riverton at the upcoming state election, Amanda Spencer-Teo has officially announced her resignation as Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the Bannister Ward of the City of Canning, effective yesterday February 12.
In a statement to the Council, Ms Spencer-Teo reflected on her tenure and shared her vision for the future.
“When I first stood for Council, my mission was clear – to address the challenges facing our community and deliver tangible results that make a difference,” she said. “It has been an extraordinary journey, and I am deeply proud of what we have achieved together.”
During her time on the Council, Ms Spencer-Teo highlighted several key achievements that she was involved with. These include the upgrading of a record number of playgrounds, sporting facilities, and community infrastructure, successfully leading the translocation of the Canning Vale Kangaroos in a landmark environmental project, introducing Shelley’s first-ever dedicated dog park, securing the endorsement of the Community Infrastructure Strategy to help pave the way for much-needed indoor courts and sporting facilities that promote female participation in grassroots sports, implementing innovative environmental strategies, installing a record number of bird watering stations and planting a record number of trees, as well as helping to implement road safety reviews and measures to ensure the roads around schools are safe.
Ms Spencer-Teo has been a Councillor for almost five years, prior to which she was a small business owner and community volunteer.
“This decision is not a farewell but the start of a new chapter. My dedication to the community remains steadfast, and I look forward to exploring new opportunities to continue making a meaningful impact,” she said.
That new opportunity is an ambition to secure the seat of Riverton at next month’s state election. The seat of Riverton includes the suburbs of Rossmoyne, Shelley, Willetton, Riverton, Parkwood, Bull Creek and a small part of Brentwood and Mt Pleasant.
The seat is currently held by Labor’s Dr Jags Krishnan.
“I put my hand up as the Liberal Candidate for Riverton because I know we deserve better and we need local representation.,” Ms Spencer-Teo said.
“As a mother of four children, I am really invested into seeing our local schools thrive, especially our primary schools.
“There’s not a day that goes by where parents aren’t discussing the waiting times in our public health system and the increase in crime, and it’s clear after eight years of Labor, things are only getting worse – it’s really time for change. The cost of living is really hurting local families, and this Government’s only response is free pre-election public transport fares and zoo passes.
“I am also passionate about investing into clubs that don’t have a home, and ensuring our female athletes have access to changeroom facilities at community sporting facilities.”
If re-elected as the Member for Riverton, some of the key projects announced by Dr Jags include the announced $20 million for the Willetton Sports Precinct, $850,000 for the Riverton Pavilion, and major upgrades for seven local primary schools. Schools to benefit include Parkwood, Rostrata, Riverton, Oberthur, Bull Creek, Rossmoyne and Burrendah primary schools.
The City of Canning Council will elect a new deputy mayor at the next council meeting on February 18, with the appointee taking over the term until it expires in October this year. The vacant position for the Bannister Ward will remain vacant until the Council elections in October.
