Police and pilots distressed by laser
Officers from Cannington Police station, working in co-junction with Police Air Wing, arrested a 52-year-old man from Rivervale who was targeting aircraft with a Light Activated Stimulated Emission of Radiation (laser) on Monday, 20 January 2025.
About 12:50am, the Western Australia Police Force helicopter (PolAir) was conducting air operations in the Belmont area after receiving reports from several commercial pilots that there was laser light being pointed at them as they were landing at the Perth International Airport.
As PolAir was conducting patrols of the area, a red laser light struck directly into the helicopter cabin containing three police air-wing officers. The laser light caused immediate disorientation and stress to the crew. Over a period of eight minutes, a laser light beam struck PolAir four times.
The shinning of the laser, interferes with the operational safety and navigational capacity of the helicopter and pilot. The helicopter crew utilised recording equipment and Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) technology to look for the offender.
PolAir captured the offender on video at a residence approximately 4.5km in a straight line away from the Perth International Airport runway. They directed police officers on the ground to the location they identified and officers located a man in the rear yard with the alleged laser used against pilots.
During a search of the residence, it will be alleged police located and seized a cross bow with 11 arrows.
The man was charged with to Cause Fear or Alarm with Laser or Light to People in Conveyances or Others; Carried or Possessed a Prohibited Weapon; and Possessed a Controlled Weapon.
