Greening our streets with free trees

Residents in the City of Gosnells have until the end of March to apply for a free street tree that will be planted on the verge of their property.

Each year, the City encourages residents to request a free street tree for their verge as part of the Street Tree Program.

“The City is committed to a greener, more sustainable future and increasing tree canopies in our suburbs is an important step towards achieving this,” Mayor Terresa Lynes said.

“Street trees carry many benefits for the local community, from improving amenity, to reducing urban heating, providing extra shade and shelter for people and wildlife, and improving air quality.

“While trees are placed on a regular watering cycle for the first two years after planting, our street trees can thrive if residents provide additional watering during the hotter months of the year.”

The program also aligns with the City’s “Greening Gosnells: Our Public Tree Strategy”, which was adopted in 2022 and identifies a range of strategies, goals and actions to improve suburban tree canopy.

This includes planning for trees, increasing the number of trees in parks, reserves and natural areas, taking steps to allow more trees in streets and road reserves, and setting specific planting targets.
