From great breakfast and coffee in the morning to quality Indian restaurant in the evening may seem a hard task but the newly opened café The Kauphy Place at 139 High Road in Willetton does it well.
The morning café does a roaring trade in both western and Indian coffees, pastries, sweets and larger breakfasts but from lunch onwards more traditional Indian cuisine is added to the menu.
Being a big fan of Indian food, I happily tried most of the dishes and was besotted with every single item.
Owner Prashanth Mereddy said most of the dishes are the more coconut-based South Indian style but there are dishes from all over the country.
The butter chicken was outstanding.
The chicken melted in the mouth while the sauce was rich and creamy.
Unlike some Indian restaurants the sweetness wasn’t overpowering.
The goat and beef curries were succulent with the perfect balance of spices.
The chicken biryani is traditionally cooked and at $10 is a bargain given you would probably pay three times that in other restaurants for lesser quality.
The Masala Dosa is also another great dish for a low price. The south Indian style crepe goes for $8 and is served with three dips and is filled with a delicious potato curry.
Another great value dish is the $6 Uthappam or ‘Indian pizza’ as Mr Mereddy describes it.
It is made with a rice and lentil batter and topped with tomato, onion and chilli and is a great savoury treat as an entrée or as its own meal.
Dessert lovers are also well catered for with a range of western and Indian cakes available including a delicious croissant doughnut hybrid cronut filled with cream.
Mr Mereddy said he decided to open The Kauphy Place after seeing a gap in the market for good quality Indian and a decent café in Willetton.
He has well and truly fixed that gap and with plans to expand the restaurant already in the pipeline I envisage it will become a go to spot for food lovers in the years to come.
The Kauphy Place is open from 6.30am to 9pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 9pm Saturday to Sunday and is closed public holidays.
