The ‘need to help others’ has kept Willetton resident Adrienne Tennent’s passion alive for volunteering.

Ms Tennent has been volunteering for St Vincent de Paul Society for more than 28 years and was recognised for her efforts at the recent WA Volunteer Service Awards.

She has been visiting people in need for most of that time helping them out with food, clothing, furniture and, in the past few years, bills.

“I wanted to do some work for the church and for others, people in need so I thought I’d do that,” she said.

“I started it up there in South Hedland and then we came back to Perth and I joined up here with the Willetton conference.

“We find it very rewarding to be able to help those who can’t manage or can’t help themselves.

“I think it’s very important because a lot of people need help and even by just going and visiting them you help with their morale when they’re feeling down.”

Member for Riverton Mike Nahan congratulated Ms Tennent on her award and praised the wider impact volunteers had.

“There’s no better person than a volunteer – someone who dedicates their time and effort to a cause which they believe in, whilst not expecting anything in return except the satisfaction of a job well done,” he said.
