Blood donor a real trooper

Storm trooper scout Glen Rhodes gave blood last week at the Cannington blood donor centre.

While not generally known for their generosity one storm trooper resisted temptations of the dark side for an hour to donate his blood.

Storm trooper scout Glen Rhodes from the Desert Scorpion Squad descended on the Cannington blood donor centre last week to help save lives of patients in need.

Mr Rhodes united with costume groups across the country to donate blood as part of Australia’s first ever costumed blood drive.

With 250 blood donations still needed at the Cannington centre during October Australian Red Cross Blood Service hoped more people would follow the lead of the nation’s costumed donors.

Australian Red Cross Blood Service spokeswoman Jess Willet said giving blood was as essential as it was rewarding.

“Costume or no costume we’re encouraging more people from the Cannington community to roll up their sleeves,” she said.

“One in three people will need blood in their lifetime.

“Currently only one in 30 donates so we’re always looking for new blood donors.

“Every blood donation only takes an hour of time and helps save the lives of three people.”

Donated blood helps people fighting cancer, living with bleeding disorders, trauma victims, pregnant women and newborn babies.

Appointments are essential.

The Cannington centre is at the Westfield Carousel Shopping Centre in Cannington.
