Maddington resident Madeline Gill has been further inspired to follow her passion for ballet after she won the choreographic award at the WA Dance Challenge on September 25.

Now the 15-year-old has her sights set on the Genee International Ballet Competition in a bid to further her ballet career.

The recent WA Dance Challenge was an opportunity for students to showcase technique, performance and artistry in a program of classes and dancers own solo performances.

Madeline is a year nine student at John Curtin College of the Arts and said has been training in ballet since she was five.

She was also professionally trained at the Carnaby Dance Centre in Maddington.

“I saw my sister dancing and I really liked it,” she said.

“Ballet lets me express myself and I really like that about it.”

Madeline trains for two to three hours, two days a week.

She said she is dedicated to being a ballet dancer and she was happy to have won the choreographic award.

“I performed a solo to classical music,” she said.

“I really enjoyed it.”

Returning to Australia after a 10-year hiatus, the Genée Ballet Competition has long helped catapult the careers of young ballet dancers worldwide.

It is recognised as an international launch pad for professional careers in dance.

The competition is the annual flagship event of the Royal Academy of Dance, attracting the finest dancers from around the world to take part.

The Genee International Ballet competition will be held in Sydney in December.
