Minnawarra Park will host an RSPCA community action day on November 23 after it was revealed the area was one of the worst for animal cruelty.
So far this year the RSPCA has received 246 cruelty reports within the City of Armadale area including 90 within the suburb of Armadale alone.
The purpose of the community action day was to engage with local communities and offer practical support and advice to improve standards of animal welfare.
It will include free vet checks, free worm and flea treatments, dog training advice and free pet food for those in need.
Members of the public will also be able to speak to RSPCA’s community outreach coordinator Nat Foster about any questions or concerns they have.
The RSPCA will also be launching the chain exchange whereby dog owners can exchange their choke chain for a more humane flat collar and lead for no charge.
A RSPCA spokeswoman said many dog owners used these collars without knowing the damage they were doing to their pet.
“Choke chains and prong collars are designed to train a dog by inflicting pain, discomfort and fear,” she said.
“This can lead to physical and emotional damage to a dog including neck and spinal injuries, anxiety and aggression.
“Our aim is to educate them on the dangers of choke chains – without judgement or reprimand – and to offer them an instant fix by providing a humane and comfortable alternative.”
The City of Gosnells was also high on the list for animal cruelty reports with 265 this year and 51 in the suburb of Gosnells alone. The action day will run from 3pm to 5pm.
