Labor candidate for Darling Range Barry Urban made his first community funding announcement of the state election campaign pledging $10,000 to support the Mundijong Serpentine Little Athletics Clubs and other clubs that train at Serpentine Primary School.
Mr Urban made the announcement at the Serpentine Primary School on January 19.
“The fund will be spent on equipment such as marquees, high jump mats, javelins, hurdles and audio equipment,” he said.
“Sporting organisations like Little Athletics are vital for developing skills in our kids and they contribute so much to communities like Serpentine.”
Mr Urban said he was proud to support local young athletes and said he looked forward to securing more commitments for Darling Range.
Mundijong and Serpentine Little Athletics Club president Shane Artemis said the funding was vital to the club.
“We’ve recently opened up the club,” he said.
“The equipment is old, some of it was in a water logged container, the shot puts have rusted, the mats are torn and we’ve got about 15 kids having to share six javelins between them.”
Mr Artemis said the club was also important to the community and it was important to support it.
“Although athletics is an individual sport there is so much camaraderie and friendship,” he said.
“I’m blown away by it all, it’s been fantastic but with the funding it would be great.
“You need an active community and the funding would be a Godsend.”
