The Carousel redevelopment will include 12 restaurants on its open-air roof.

Construction has begun on upgrades to Cannington’s Carousel Shopping Centre, which will create 60 new stores, a rooftop entertainment area and a multi-storey car park with valet parking.

Westfield owners Scentre Group announced the $350 million redevelopment last week and said it would be completed by late 2018.

The company said upgrades would increase the centre’s size by about 35 per cent and said a new David Jones store within the centre was expected to create about 100 retail jobs.

It said development of the unused rooftop would create space for an open-air entertainment area with 12 restaurants.

The centre’s Hoyts Cinema would also be refurbished.

Scentre Group said a multi-storey car park and 300 extra parking bays would be built with valet parking available.

A major WA media outlet claimed the valet service would cost between $5 and $15 but Scentre Group denied this.

The company said entrances and parking at the Albany Highway side of the centre would not be accessible during construction.

It was unable to say how many parking bays would be closed.

The Albany Highway entry area contains a large portion of all parking bays at the centre and area closures could greatly impact parking availability.

Scentre Group head of corporate affairs Julia Clarke said she was confident the project would be completed in time for Christmas next year.

Carousel is one of three Westfield shopping centres being refurbished in Perth with similar upgrades expected at two northern suburbs sites.
