Many Australians have woken to the news of a terrorist attack in London, which has left four people dead and 40 injured in a car and knife attack by a suspected Islamic terrorist on Westminster Bridge.

Federal member for Canning and chairman of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security Andrew Hastie has strongly condemned the attack.

The committee has released a statement saying its heartfelt sympathies go to the victims of this heinous crime.

Mr Hastie said the attack was both an indiscriminate crime against innocent people and an attack against the institutions of democracy, which underpin a free and fair society in the UK and Australia.

“The committee values Australia’s international cooperation with key security allies and strongly supports measures to protect national security,” he said.

“Recognising the changing threat environment and the increased risk of lone attacks, the committee has worked very hard on reforms to strengthen Australia’s national security laws.

“The committee will continue to work to ensure our agencies have the appropriate powers and resources they need to respond to the ongoing terrorist threat and keep Australians safe.”
