Author and illustrator James Foley will teach children how to draw their own robots during the Armadale Arts Festival.

Children will have a chance to hone in on their writing and drawing skills and learn a bit about the world of publishing at a free workshop being held by the City of Armadale during the Armadale Arts Festival this month.

West Australian authors and illustrators James Foley, Kylie Howarth and Sean E. Avery will be running the workshop together.

Children in attendance will get to see how books are published and go through art and writing activities with the hosts.

Mr Foley said he expected the children would learn lots of skills from the workshop.

“I’m going to be showing them how to design their own robot characters,” he said.

“My last book was a comic book about a girl inventor who builds her own robot character so the kids will be designing their own with me.”

Mr Foley said it would be a great chance for children to meet real authors and illustrators to put a face to the books they read.

“It’s great for literacy, it’s great for kids who want to be creative, it’s great for kids for learning how to make stories and learn skills like resilience and persistence,” he said.

Mr Foley has written a number of children’s books including My Dead Bunny which was shortlisted for Picture Book of the Year in the Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards.

His book In the Lion was selected for the 2013 International Youth Library’s White Raven list.

The Kids Workshop has been designed for children aged six and 10 years.

It will be held on April 29 from 1.30pm to 3pm and bookings can be made at armadaleartsfestival.com.au.
