The Armadale RSL will see its outside walls brightened by the addition of a mural stretching across two sides of the building.

The walls on the south and south-western end near the Armadale Train Station will be worked on and the artwork will feature a mix of old and new styles.

Much of the painting was being completed by Armadale youths who were interested in art.

The mural was funded by a $20,000 grant from Lotterywest as well as money from the RSL.

Armadale RSL secretary Anthony Wilton said the response from within the organisation had been positive and he hoped it would show the RSL was a part of the community and not just for returned soldiers.

“We’ve got a professional company coming in and they work with youth groups to teach them,” he said.

“It’s going to be a graffiti style, modern and old.

“Some of the artwork is also going to involve new concepts.”

The permanent artwork was partly completed last weekend and will be finished in the coming weeks.

Mr Wilton said there was another mural in the area that had largely escaped vandalism and he hoped the same respect would be shown to this one but CCTV had been upgraded at the RSL to deter vandals.

Mr Wilton said the artwork would promote the RSL as being a big part of the city.

“It highlights that the Armadale RSL is part of the Armadale community,” he said.

“We’re not just here for the soldiers, we’re here for the community.”
