St John Ambulance first aid officer Glenn Willan hands Murdarda childcare centre director Claire Siaus the new St John Safe certificate.

An Armadale childcare centre was the first in the area to receive a new first aid accreditation certificate from St John Ambulance.

The St John Safe program was launched in June last year to give official recognition to schools and childcare centres that were deemed ready for any first aid situation.

The accreditation process involved a safety assessment of the facility which was conducted by a St John first aid officer.

Mundarda Community Childcare Centre in Seville Grove received the certificate last week (April 9-15) and was the first in the area to be given the accreditation.

St John general manager first aid services and training Aaron Harding said he was pleased Mundarda had received the recognition.

“Mundarda has shown their dedication to safety and they have worked hard with our safety specialist to ensure that they comply with the guidelines and have every base covered in the event of an incident,” he said.

“This is significant given the recent media reports where adequate first aid training had not been provided to staff at a childcare facility in Perth.

“The St John Safe program is a way of communicating to parents and the wider community that the facility has first aid training, equipment and systems in place to deal with an emergency.”

Recommendations from the St John Safe Assessment include signing up educators to first aid courses, having defibrillators at the facility, ensuring enough first aid kits were available and providing child-specific first aid sessions for groups of parents and caregivers.

Mundarda director Claire Siaus said the childcare centre was proud of the award.
