Every year Thornlie Christian College has a different theme to encourage their students to grow in their understanding of the college and the outside world.

Last month teacher Rob Nightingale took his year 10 students to the Southern River Community Gardens in keeping with this year’s theme ‘service’.

More than 20 students spent their morning volunteering at the garden.

Student Serena Beacher, 15, said it was fun learning about what was happening in the community, how to look after a garden and how different plants grew.

“I learned about serving and giving back to my community,” she said.

“I had a lot of fun and would definitely do it again.”

Mr Nightingale said he wanted to show his class different ways to serve the community and make them aware of their suburb.

“Going to the garden provided a great opportunity for all the students to help out and give their time to a great local initiative,” he said.

“The day involved helping out in different tasks throughout the garden.

“Some students were weeding, others were packing down gazebos, some planted seedlings and one student even helped design a mural.”

Mr Nightingale said he wanted to extend the act of service outside the college campus and find ways for his students to practically serve the wider community.
