A Kelmscott community group which specialises in a unique type of marching has its eyes set on the national championships.
Drill Dance is a non-contact team sport based on traditional marching.
In it teams work with music to create choreographed dances and drills for public performance.
Phoenix Drill Team secretary Melanie Hickman said it was a great sport to help people with learning discipline, timing and confidence.
“It’s the new version of marching,” she said.
“It’s suitable for everyone and we say if you can walk, you can drill dance.”
The club formed about three years ago and most members are ex-marchers.
It has two teams – Phoenix Rising for under 17-year-olds and the Phoenix squad for adults.
Phoenix Rising were the 2016/17 State Champions of the Thematic Dance category with a unique Flintstones routine.
They were also awarded most improved team that season.
The Masters team is booked in for the interstate nationals competition next year
Phoenix Drill Team is looking for new members to boost its current 20-person strong club.
The youth side trains at Kelmscott Primary School from 4.30pm to 6.30pm on Saturdays and the adult team trains at Hampton Park Primary School in Morley on Mondays from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
