The City of Canning is hosting a series of free events and activities from November 28 to December 8 to celebrate International Day of People with Disability and promote inclusion.

A series of free events and activities to celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) will be held by the City of Canning later this month.

From November 28 to December 8, residents of Canning can participate in a variety of free, inclusive activities aimed at promoting unity, understanding, and acceptance of people with disabilities.

These activities include a Fit4All class at Cannington Leisureplex, a youth centre barbecue, dance classes, art workshops, a trishaw ride around Canning River Regional Park, face painting, and a silent disco.

People living with disabilities can also enjoy free access to the gym and aquatic facilities at the City’s two Leisureplexes, located in Riverton and Cannington, for the entire week.

Events include a Fit4All class, a trishaw ride, art workshops, and free access to gym and aquatic facilities at Canning’s Leisureplexes.

The 2024 International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) theme, “Confident, Capable and Creative: Come with Me,” is encouraging Western Australians to be more inclusive and empower people with disabilities to fully participate in all aspects of society.

City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said residents should consider the needs of people with disabilities in their everyday thinking, adding that “disability inclusion should not be an afterthought.”

“Approximately 15 per cent of the world’s population live with some form of disability, and evidence demonstrates that once we remove barriers to inclusion and persons with disabilities are empowered to fully participate in society, the entire community will benefit,” Mayor Hall said.

“It is important that we continue to challenge these barriers and work towards making the City of Canning a more accessible and inclusive place to live and work.”

The events also aim to raise community awareness that not all disabilities are visible, as some individuals live with non-visible or “hidden” disabilities.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in 2018, around 1 in 6 people in Australia, or approximately 18 per cent, equating to about 4.4 million individuals, were living with a disability.
