Spring has returned and so has Amanda’s memorial garden fete, bringing with it a dazzling display of colour as the garden comes into full bloom.
The annual fete, held on October 24 and 25 at the corner of Margaret and Matison streets in Southern River, would promote meningococcal awareness and raise money for the Amanda Young foundation.
The fete was established in 1998 by Barry and Lorraine Young following the sudden death of their 18-year-old daughter Amanda from the disease.
Mr Young said the fete had grown into a great community event that enjoyed the support of local people and community groups. “It’s a good time of year for it and the garden is starting to look stunning,” he said.
The fete would feature garden and art displays, a sausage sizzle and music as well as a selection of plants for sale.
Mr Young said one of the enduring attractions was the mass display of Amanda roses, which were a brilliant yellow Floribunda that was fragrant and thornless.
Funds raised at the fete helped the foundation purchase the merchandise it gave out at schools as part of the ongoing effort to educate the community about meningococcal.
Entry to the fete was $5 for adults.
