The City of Gosnells is in desperate need of volunteer bus drivers to assist local seniors by transporting them to and from the Addie Mills Centre.
The facility offers a wide array of weekly programs Monday to Friday to suit all interests, including capacity-building activities like Brain Training and Exergaming, interactive games such as Scrabble and Mahjong, as well as monthly workshops and outings.
In order for these valuable programs to continue running smoothly, the Council is seeking dedicated volunteer drivers to ensure seniors can reliably access the Centre’s services.
Stan Smith has been a volunteer driver for the Addie Mills Centre for 22 years and highly recommends the selfless experience to others.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my whole time and the camaraderie here; I haven’t regretted any of it. I feel good about helping others; I just like doing it,” he said.
“Those that care are cared for, so one day it might be my turn to sit in the bus as a passenger, and I will be able to enjoy what I’ve done to help others.”
After retiring last year, Julie Sanders volunteers twice a week as a bus assistant, supporting drivers and helping residents get on and off the bus. She also thoroughly enjoys the experience.
“I just really enjoy the interaction with the folk; they’re so much fun, and they have a very relaxed attitude,” she said.
“The drivers are also a lot of fun, and I have become firm friends with them.”
In return for their service, volunteers will receive discounts at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre and Leisure World, along with access to the Centre’s programs and services.
Mayor Terresa Lynes hopes more community members will volunteer as bus drivers, recognising their crucial role in ensuring seniors can access the Centre’s programs and activities.
“Our volunteer bus drivers are an essential part of the City’s Seniors programs because they allow people who no longer drive to access activities and events at the Addie Mills Centre,” she said.
“The City’s Seniors programs provide an essential service that allows our residents to remain active and engaged in the community while making valuable friendships as they age.”
Volunteer bus drivers are required to have a minimum MR (Medium Rigid) class licence.
