An hour-long candle light vigil will be held tonight at Armadale memorial park to highlight poverty, inequality and climate change during the Canning by-election.

The vigil, organised by Oxfam’s campaign for Australian aid, was aimed at bringing together community groups, environmental groups and church communities committed to seeing an end to global poverty.

Oxfam’s Paddy Cullen said campaign for Australian aid was asking the government to join world leaders in adopting the global goals that laid out a plan for creating a more prosperous, sustainable and equitable world.

“We have a chance to act as a community together and be the generation to end global poverty, address inequality and end climate change but we need people power to make this happen,” he said.

Greens Canning candidate Vanessa Rauland and Labor party candidate Matt Keough will speak at the event.

Liberal candidate Andrew Hastie was unable to attend due to a prior commitment but said he had worked in developing countries, sponsored a child and was committed to aid and development.

The vigil starts at 6pm.
