Earlier this month, the banks of the Canning River came alive with energy as over 400 primary school students from across Perth gathered at Kent Street Weir for the City of Canning’s 14th annual Earth Day Expo.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Canning River Regional Park, the area turned into an outdoor classroom where kids got hands-on with fun activities about biodiversity, reducing waste, and saving water.

Deputy Mayor Mark Bain officially opened the event alongside Mayor Patrick Hall and local sustainability superhero Captain Cleanup.

“These children are our future, and it will be their determination and commitment that decides the direction of our planet,” Mayor Hall shared during the opening.

Local schools including Riverton Primary School and Bannister Creek Primary School were among those in attendance, with each class rotating through five interactive sustainability stations led by environmental professionals. Despite a few light showers, spirits remained high and the enthusiasm from students and presenters alike was contagious.

Presented by the City’s Canning River Eco Education Centre (CREEC) in partnership with the Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE-WA), the expo continues to be one of Perth’s biggest environmental education events for Year two to Year six students.

The City of Canning extended its thanks to all involved in making the day a success, especially the passionate staff at CREEC who helped organise and deliver the event.
