Cruel: Kittens found dumped in a skip bin

The human spirit is alive and well.

A Cannington man has made a heart-breaking discovery of six kittens trapped in a taped-up box in a skip bin, and rescued them.

Found on Monday, February 17, the homeless man was searching through a skip bin to find the discarded box, with a second box next to it appearing to contain their mother cat who likely escaped but was unable to free her kittens.

The man was disturbed by the discovery and rushed them to a nearby vet where they received urgent care.

“These kittens are now safe, but they never should have been abandoned this way. No animal deserves such mistreatment,” said Cat Haven’s Marketing Manager Amber Ashford.

“We are urging the community to act responsibly and seek help when faced with unwanted tiny helpless kittens.

“With temperatures soaring in the afternoon on Monday these kittens would have been dead in a number of hours.”

Cat Haven is aiming to obtain security footage from surrounding businesses, and if the culprit is found, charges will be pressed.

Ms Amber said it had been a relentless summer season for cat arrivals at the Cat Haven, with some days seeing up to 80 cats and kittens coming in.

“We place no judgement on people surrendering cats or kittens to us and will always take any that are in need. We also have amnesty crates at the front of Cat Haven if you can’t drop them off during open hours or wish to stay anonymous. We just want them to find a new loving home. There is never an excuse to dump them in such a cruel manner,” she said.

Ms Ashford said Cat Haven understood that finding kittens could be overwhelming, and there are always better options than dumping them.

“Cat Haven offers free desexing for mum cat if you bring us the litter of kittens,” she said. “We would love to stop the cycle and see less kittens coming through our doors.”

Cat Haven is located at 23 Lemnos Street, Shenton Park, and can be contacted on 9442 3600.
