Curtin University’s concrete walls have been splashed with colour by some of Australia’s and the world’s best street artists as part of the Public Festival.

Sixteen street artists descended on the campus from April 4 to 10 to create massive murals throughout the university.

WA street artist Chris Nixon painted a 25m x 7m mural on an undercover area roof. He said the Public Festival was a great chance to get the conversation about art happening.

“People have come to this space that would never have come here,” he said.

“It’s good spark to start thinking about what public art is and what those other misconceptions are about street art.”

Mr Nixon said while generally accepted as a tool to liven up previously dull public spaces there was some opposition to street art.

“Currently there is a bit of kickback, there’s some people who think we’re defacing well known architecture,” he said.

“It’s important to know it’s very well curated and it’s definitely considered with the use of the space.”

The Public Festival moved to Albany this week where artists will paint more murals.
