Starting on Tuesday, for the entire month of October, the City of Canning will host its annual Community Safety Month initiative, focusing on raising awareness and promoting safety across various aspects of daily life, including personal safety, school safety, home security, and business safety.
Through a series of events and initiatives aimed at sharing information and promoting community safety, the city hopes to empower residents to take proactive measures and cultivate a more cohesive and secure environment.
Events and activities include the Pet Photo Competition, Coffee with a Cop and Coffee with a Ranger sessions, Safe Plate Day, women’s self-defence classes, community safety pop ups and Ranger Buddy appearances at various City events.
The City’s Community Safety team will also be making an appearance at the Canning Show on Saturday, November 2.
Mayor Patrick Hall believes Community Safety Month is the perfect opportunity for residents to inform themselves about effective crime prevention strategies.
“Community Safety Month is a time for our community to learn about community safety and, with that, take proactive steps to ensure the safety of our homes, businesses, and public spaces,” he said.
“By increasing our own awareness, we are all contributing to a safer, more connected Canning.”
According to Red Suburbs Australia, which breaks down crime rate data in Australia, the City of Canning ranks a concerning 70 out of 100 based on the severity of crimes relative to its population, with the primary crime types being theft, fraud, and assault and related offences. In 2023, the city recorded 4,372 reported cases of theft.
Mayor Hall hopes these activities and initiatives will make Canning a safer place for everyone.
“We want everyone in our community to feel empowered to take part in building a safer Canning,” he said.
“These events are designed to be informative, engaging, and, most importantly, inclusive. I encourage residents to attend these free events to learn about the importance of community safety and take advantage of the information that is available to them.”
