The Falcons Basketball team will be proudly stepping out in some new guernseys after fresh support from local businesses and community identities.

The Falcons were formed in 2021 as a community-based all abilities basketball club for people of all ages in the SJ Shire.

But for club founder and chairman Trevor Holmes, inclusion was more than just acceptance of different skill levels and physical abilities; it was also important to provide an affordable option for those in the community who would otherwise struggle financially to be part of a sports team.

“Kids need to have something to aspire to. And with the Falcons, we’re all one big team – it’s not about winning, it’s about teamwork, building confidence and community. And that spills over into their lives,” he said.

“Sport brings a community together, and money shouldn’t be an obstacle to someone’s enjoyment of sport.

“We cater for people within the community who can’t afford to pay exorbitant membership fees.

“And kids aren’t charged for their uniforms.

“We look for sponsorship from local businesses to put towards uniforms which players can borrow and then return at the end of the season.”

Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale president Rob Coales has proudly put his name and his wallet behind the Falcons this season.

“I liked the fact that my sponsorship contribution was going directly towards buying uniforms for kids who perhaps couldn’t otherwise have afforded a guernsey,” he said.

“A uniform is important – it helps build a sense of identity as a team.

“And sport is a great avenue to learn lifelong skills like leadership, teamwork, cooperation and tenacity.”

The club’s sixth season has just kicked off. But Trevor said there’s still plenty of space for anyone wanting to join.

“We don’t stop anyone – we’ll always find a place for them,” he said.

Games are played mid-week at the Byford Secondary College and Byford John Calvin School and there are teams for ages 4 right through to seniors. Active Kids vouchers are welcomed.
