Funding for CCTV at Mills Park

The Federal Government has announced more than $80,000 to fund 23 CCTV cameras at Mills Park in Beckenham.

Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan announced the funding during a visit to the newly redeveloped park last week and said the cameras would cover key crime hotspot areas in Mills Park including car parks, playgrounds, skate parks and barbecue and recreational areas.

“Unfortunately with big public facilities there is always the potential for antisocial behaviour, things like vandalism and people doing the wrong thing,” he said.

“We know when we install CCTV that it is a deterrent and it stops people from doing it in the first place.

“Secondly, if somebody does do the wrong thing CCTV helps police catch them and help put them through the courts.”

Mr Keenan said the cameras were funded through the proceeds of crime account, which is taken from criminals and reinvested into prevention of further crime.

Federal Member for Hasluck Ken Wyatt said Mills Park was a stunning facility that deserved to be protected.

“The addition of a café in the coming months will further enhance people’s attraction to Mills Park,” he said.

“This in addition to the added safety through CCTV has really added to this community.”
