Following the success of other women’s sport competitions the Forrestdale Cricket Club was working with the West Australian Cricket Association and the City of Armadale to launch its first women’s series.

Forrestdale Cricket Club president Jason Glover said it would be a good chance for women to get involved in cricket in a pressure-free, laid-back environment.

“It came off the back of the Forrestdale Fillies Football Team doing so well this year,” he said.

The Fillies were the new women’s side of the Forrestdale Falcons Australian Rules Football Club, which was formed at the beginning of this season.

Its membership has already grown to 30 players in just a few months.

Training for the six-a-side, 12-over innings games will begin in September and games would be played on Friday nights for about 90 minutes.

The team plans to use softer balls than standard cricket balls meaning no pads, gloves or helmets would be necessary.

Mr Glover said the women would be able to bowl underarm.

“It’s just about getting out there and throwing the ball around,” he said.

The club hoped the competition would be held as traditional grade cricket after its first season with tighter rules if it proved popular.

Calling the Forrestdale competition an intermediate between outdoor and indoor cricket Mr Glover also said there would be no harm in having a go.

“Just come down to check it out,” he said.

“It’s a social event, it’s laid back and it’s not serious so if you want to try something new for summer just give it a shot.”

The Forrestdale Cricket Club was based at William Skeet Reserve and pre-season training was expected to start September 7 with the first game on October 14.

The male side was also looking for players and anybody interested in joining either side can call Mr Glover on 0400 500 172.
