A Mount Nasura resident will be heading back to Silguri, West Bengal at the start of next year to provide chiropractic and basic medical care.
Chiropractor Andrew Smith first travelled to India in 2011 and said he was overwhelmed by the feeling of extreme poverty and just wanted to give something back.
“Many of these people don’t have anything let alone health care,” he said.
“There is a lot of joy in being able to help.”
Dr Smith will travel with a group of other health care professionals in 2018 as part of the Hands on India team.
Officially formed in 2016 Hands on India was a not-for-profit organisation which made annual trips to India.
It was made up of about 30 chiropractors who provide musculoskeletal and basic health care to locals for two weeks.
Dr Smith was currently fundraising for the Hands on India Ball.
He said Hands On India supported seven schools, was educating 700 children and had 2300 women in a ladies empowerment program.
“We start in the morning and we work right through until we’ve seen everyone for the day,” he said.
“We set up clinics in the community and sometimes we see thousands of people.
“For many of the people we see it’s the simple basic human touch they have never really known.
“It’s just nice to be able to hold their hands or see them smile.”
The Hands on India Ball will be on November 11 at Lake Karrinyup Country Club.
