It was a sombre start to the football game between Gosnells City and Dianella White Eagles on Saturday with both teams observing a minute’s silence for the Forrestfield coach’s son who tragically lost his life.
Playing at Walter Padbury Reserve, Thornlie the first half saw the Gosnell’s defence hold their own against a fierce attacking side from Dianella.
Dianella posed a real threat to the home team especially when a Dianella player artfully crossed the ball narrowly missing their goal.
Eager to score Gosnells had numerous opportunities but were just unable to get past the Dianella goalie.
Half way through the first half Gosnells were awarded a free kick following a controversial tussle between the Gosnells and Dianella.
The ball sailed perfectly through the air but Gosnells supporters were left disappointed when in an attempt to score the ball was kicked too high missing the goal.
The second half saw both teams come back determined to score a winning goal, as the game continued it became dirty with a number of yellow cards being given to Dianella players.
Towards the end of the game it was not about scoring but defending the goals from Dianella, it was vital for Gosnells not to concede the three points.
At the blow of the final whistle Gosnells came away without any goals but happy they hadn’t given away points to Dianella avoiding relegation.
Gosnells coach Alan Dunlop said his side deserved the point and could have possibly pinched the three.
“You see the professionalism, discipline and no yellow cards,” he said.
“They also worked hard and 11 players shone today.”
Mr Dunlop said he was thrilled with the way the team played.
Gosnells City play away Fremantle City on August 5 at 3pm.
