The Serpentine Jarrahdale Girl Guides held a fundraising event in Byford on Mother’s Day to help fund the local organisation.

More than 12 girls ranging in age form seven to 15 took part in the fundraiser.

Girl guide leader Lynn Madaffari said although the money raised was still being counted they may have raised close to $1000.

Ms Madaffari said the girl guides held a sausage sizzle, mother’s day raffle and sold Girl Guide biscuits.

“The day was quite busy,” she said.

“The public were very supportive of our cause.”

Ms Madaffari said the funds raised would go directly towards unit expenses and subsiding resources and activities.

“The girls were very engaging, giving out stickers to little children and even helping some people take their shopping to the vehicles,” she said.

“One lady had a very full basket of shopping and she had problems walking so after the girls had helped her to her car the lady gave them a donation of $10 which was very generous.”

Ms Madaffari said the girls worked very hard during the day, particularly staffing the stalls.

She also said they were supervised by supportive parents and leaders and most of the girls stayed for a large portion of the day.

“Our unit is very proactive in the community,” she said.

“We welcome girls from all parts of the shire from the ages of five and above.

“The girls are encouraged to be self directed in the activities and are also encouraged to develop independence and leadership skills.”
