On 2 April, Premier Roger Cook directed the Public Sector Commissioner to arrange for the holding of an independent Special Inquiry to examine and report on the planning and delivery of the 2025 WA State Election.
On 7 April, the Public Sector Commissioner appointed Malcolm McCusker as Special Inquirer to conduct the Inquiry in accordance with specified Terms of Reference.
The Terms of Reference include the resourcing, planning and management of polling booths; the decision to outsource some aspects of the election; ballot paper allocation and management; efficiency and effectiveness of vote counting and processing; and changes needed to improve the planning and delivery of future WA state elections.
The Special Inquirer is obtaining information from the WA Electoral Commission and is also inviting members of the public to make submissions to the Inquiry on matters relevant to the Terms of Reference.
Submissions are open until Friday 9 May 2025 at 4 pm.
The Terms of Reference of the Special Inquiry and information on how to make a submission are at WA.gov.au/SEspecialinquiry.
A final report on the conduct of the Special Inquiry and its findings and recommendations is to be provided by 30 June 2025 to the Public Sector Commissioner who is responsible for providing the report to the Premier.
