Help needed to build SJ’s new Youth Advisory Council

18

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is calling on young people to be the local voice for their generation.

The shire is building a new Youth Advisory Council (YAC), comprised of locals aged 12 to 17, to influence decisions on matters that impact youth in the community.

The role of a YAC member usually includes representing the views of young people to local government, developing and organising activities and events for local young people, encouraging greater participation of young people in community initiatives, and

helping distribute information to young people and the wider community.

Currently the shire is running a YAC engagement project which is gauging interest from locals who might want to become a member of the YAC.

The survey is also seeking feedback on what the YAC should look like – how often it should meet, whether meetings are held in-person or online, and what its main focusses should be.

Through this project, the shire wants to hear ideas and suggestions to help shape the future of youth programs, events, and services in our community.

Input will be vital in making sure the YAC reflects the needs and interests of young people across the shire.
