Student and Hilbert local Seth Del Caro travelled to Bunbury last week with being told he had the special opportunity to play with Western Australia’s AFL 12 Years and Under State Team.
Ordinarily the team travels nationally to compete in the School Sport Australia Championships but due to COVID-19 concerns that was not an option this year.
The program is run by School Sport WA who are contracted by the Department of Education to manage safe and efficient competitive school sport programs on its behalf.
Seth said the experience was great and found the selection process exciting.
“I was against some very talented footballers,” he said.
“To have the team finalised and have gone away together was an amazing experience I will remember it forever.”
“The selection process took place over a couple of months.”
According to Seth, his school nominated him to try out for the team and there were over 1200 kids trying out for a spot.
“All up there were four try outs with each time cutting down the numbers by at least half,” he said.
“We then waited each time to see if I had made the next trail.
“That was very nerve racking.”
Seth has been playing football since he was eight years old.
“I love everything about football, from going to the AFL games to watch with my family, playing with my club footy team, football academy at school and pretty much anything footy related,” he said.
Seth currently holds an AFL scholarship at Court Grammar School.
