Thornlie teenager Jack Burt will join the Western Australian baseball team to compete at this year’s school sport Australia Pacific school games in Adelaide from Friday.
The 17-year-old was one of almost 400 students who had been selected by school sport WA to compete in the games, which would run from November 20 to 29 and feature nine sports.
Jack said he was surprised to have been selected for the team in his first try out.
“I’ve been playing baseball for nine years and I started in teeball when I was about five,” he said.
“I kept going because it’s fun, it’s a bit different and not everyone plays it but I don’t really try out for baseball teams usually so it was kind of like first time lucky I guess.”
Jack said he was feeling confident about the team’s chances in the competition despite not having competed at this level before.
“We’ve got a really good team so I think we’re going to win pretty easily,” he said.
Jack said he usually played baseball for the Gosnells Hawks as a catcher and often had the opportunity to train with players from Perth Heat, who were based in Thornlie
He would continue playing baseball and hoped to compete on a professional level.
