Local chef Jess Roe will be competing against the country’s best in Sydney.

Cannington chef Jess Roe, 23, is representing WA in Sydney in Australia’s longest running culinary competition for young chefs.

Jess, a newly appointed sous chef at Bistro Guillaume (Crown Metropolitan Perth), impressed judges with her menu.

Jess is excited to see where the experience takes her.

“Food has the ability to change a person’s day and can create memories from a single bite,” she said.

“There is so much flexibility and freedom when it comes to cooking, your ability as a chef to push the boundaries and create something special.

“I’m definitely taking that mindset into the grand finals.”

To secure her spot in the grand finals of the 2023 Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Award, she created an impressive menu of glazed pork loin with a couscous salad, followed by a sweet potato and vanilla tart with red wine caramel and an oat and walnut crumb.

The Australian Culinary Federation judging panel rated each dish to globally recognised culinary standards, awarding Roe an overall gold.

Jess is now one of 12 top chefs from across Australia and New Zealand gearing up to do kitchen battle at Fine Food Australia in September, where one winner will be crowned Golden Chef of the Year.
