Kitten season hits second wave

The Animal Protection Society in Southern River was overflowing with kittens, all who were ready to be homed as the second wave of kitten season hit full swing.

APS committee member Robyn Thoman said kitten season started in November and went through to Christmas but the second wave started in January.

“We’ve had so many kittens,” she said.

“It just hasn’t stopped, we are currently struggling to take in animals as it is and with increased numbers of animals in need it makes our work very difficult at this time of year.”

Ms Thoman said the society would like to raise awareness of these issues in the community and gain some support as funding was one of the biggest challenges they faced.

“At the moment we have about 104 cats at the shelter,” she said.

“We’re trying to get more funding for the kitten shed.”

Ms Thoman said the City of Gosnells had helped partially fund the APS but with the second wave of kitten season she said the animals needed a safe place to go to.

“Kittens do not like to be alone,” she said.

“They are not in a natural state to be alone so if anyone is considering adopting it is worth adopting two as they are company for each other especially if people are away at work all day.

“It is wonderful to take two which have already bonded.”

Ms Thoman said all the cats had been taken to the vet, checked and vaccinated.

She also said the society encouraged residents to visit the shelter at 27 Talbot Road, Southern River between 10am and 3pm on week days.
