With the state election behind us, election promises for the federal election are starting to roll in, and the Serpentine Jarrahdale Netball Association looks to be the first winner.

Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie has announced that a Liberal Government will invest $2.4 million to upgrade the Mundijong Netball Courts in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, if elected.

Mr Hastie said the project will provide local netballers, families, and volunteers with the infrastructure they need to stay active, safe, and connected for years to come.

“Sport brings our community together, and these upgrades are long overdue,” he said.

“That’s why I’m making a commitment to deliver better courts, improved lighting, upgraded facilities, and safer parking.”

Currently, the courts are worn down, with unsafe playing surfaces and just two toilets available for female players and spectators.

With all four courts in constant use during the season, these much-needed upgrades will create a safer, more accessible environment for players of all ages.

The project will include re-surfacing of the courts, a canteen upgrade and enhanced lighting and parking.

Association life member Bill Denholm gives Mr Hastie a ‘warts and all’ tour of the current canteen.

President of the Serpentine Jarrahdale Netball Association Aleesha Denholm welcomed the commitment.

“The committee, parents, and players will breathe a sigh of relief, finally seeing something done to this facility. The players will be able to participate safely on new courts and see the ball at training with new lights,” she said.

Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Rob Coales said the announcement marked a significant milestone for the SJ community.
“These courts have long been in need of improvement. It is a testament to the dedication of the shire’s players, both young and not-so-young, that they have continued to play the sport they love despite less-than-ideal conditions,” he said.

“Encouraging active, healthy lifestyles and promoting sports participation is a priority for our community.

“It will create a more welcoming and supportive environment for our future star netballers, ensuring they have the facilities they deserve to thrive.”
