The Thornlie Bowling Club will be posting another milestone when it hosts the Raven Classic Bowling competition again on Saturday, March 1.

The carnival has been a feature of the bowls calendar locally for nearly 30 years, attracting teams from across the metropolitan area and country districts.

Teams of four players will compete together and in pairs over the day, and morning tea and a fully catered lunch will be served.

LJ Hooker Thornlie/Canning Vale has demonstrated its commitment to the local community and the bowling club by continuing its sponsorship of the annual Raven Classic.

Players will compete for $5000 in prize money; the first prize being $2000.

The club is proud to show off its quality, synthetic playing surfaces and spacious clubrooms, which have attracted a number of state events, including finals, since being completed three years ago.

The Thornlie Bowling Club has been a cornerstone of the community since 1966, when Thornlie was little more than a budding suburb with just 500 houses and 2,000 residents.

The club quickly took shape, with the first greens ready for play by late 1969 and the clubhouse officially opening in 1971.

For 40 years, it thrived at its Ravenhill Road home, where many special memories were made, meat raffles were won, and plenty of pints and wines were dunk before moving around 75 metres north to the new Thornlie Park Centre in 2021, a modern sporting hub that also houses the Thornlie Tennis Club.

The new facility was made possible through funding from the Federal Government, Lotterywest, the City of Gosnells, and the club itself.

The Thornlie Bowling Club welcomes members of all abilities, with something for everyone, offering three membership categories: Pennant Bowler members, who can use club facilities, play Pennants, hold office, and vote on club matters; Club Bowler members, who can enjoy social bowls, hold office, and vote; and Social members, who have access to the club’s facilities and can play bowls by invitation of the club committee.

Further details of the Raven Classic and other happenings at Thornlie Bowling Club are available on the Thornlie Bowling Club Facebook page and club website.
