It’s now been one year since the realisation of the Byford and Districts Croquet Club, and founder Marie Donovan couldn’t be prouder.
With 14 registered members, striking new purple uniforms, three courts, and regular professional coaching sessions, the club is going from strength to strength.
“Gosh we’ve come a long way,” she said. “I’m really impressed at the standard of play we’ve achieved this year.”
But the greatest triumph, according to Marie, are the incredible friendships that have developed between members.
“This club has really coaxed people out of their shells – they’re so full of life, they’re radiating,” she said.
“And the friendships that are being formed are really significant. That was the main goal I wanted to achieve through this croquet club, and we’re seeing some really great results.
“Even relatives are amazed at the difference being a part of this club has made on some of our players’ lives.”
Marie said there’s a real sense of ownership, with everyone getting a say and getting stuck in.
“I have a tremendous group of people who all chip in,” she said.
And she’s hoping to attract more people keen on being part of the friendship, fun and gentle fitness.
“The club has really been building – but we could always do with some more members,” she said.
“Croquet is an outstanding sport suitable for all ages and thoroughly enjoyed by seniors.
“It is outdoors and combines exercise, strategies, friendship, fun and opportunities to compete and hone your skills.
“It is not expensive, and croquet mallets are available on loan.
“Currently we play every Tuesday morning 9.30-11.30am at the Bill Hicks Pavilion in Byford, and soon we will switch to Tuesday evenings, but we need more members so we can expand our playing days and times.”
The Byford and Districts Croquet Club will be hosting a Family Fun Day on Saturday, November 16 from 10am to 2pm.
Visitors can see games in action, try out their skills in activities and tuck into a sausage sizzle free of charge.
