Western Australian Music award nominee Anika Lawrence

It wasn’t just another love story that made Anika Lawrence stand out to judges, it was her original song ‘Just Friends’ that saw her nominated for the West Australian Music Awards (WAM) song of the year.

The Canning Vale College year 10 student was one of five chosen in the 14 and under category in the WAM’S annual song writing competition.

“Finding inspiration is hard at this point of my life because I haven’t experienced many things yet,” she said.

“My song ‘Just Friends’ is about a boy that liked me last year but for different reasons I

told him I could only be friends with him.”

Anika’s mum, Anna Lawrence, said she is happy to know wonderful music teachers are supporting her daughter and other nominees in the Canning Vale College specialist music program she is currently involved in.

Earlier this year she was a finalist in the Fairbridge Festival Quest Youth Song writing competition.

“Without the support from her teachers Ms Harrison, Ms Spina and Mr Culverwell she would not have achieved such great results with her music,” she said.

Anika said she never expected this to happen and is now happy basking and focusing on recording more music in the future.
