For families doing it tough, the festive season can be one of the most challenging and stressful times of the year.
As the cost of living continues to soar, many disadvantaged parents and their children will be doing it tougher than ever this Christmas, with no signs of relief for the new year ahead.
CEO of Communicare in Cannington Melissa Perry said demand for support services and emergency relief had continued to rise unabated this year, with families struggling to maintain affordable rentals and pay surging power bills.
“It’s not only those individuals and families without a regular income who are in financial distress, more and more we’re seeing people who work two to three jobs, but still can’t afford the rent each fortnight,” Ms Perry said.
“Across the community, people are hurting, but our most disadvantaged West Australians face an even bleaker festive season; not having enough money for a Christmas tree, let alone a few simple gifts for their children, is heartbreaking.
“Even for those who don’t celebrate Christmas, the holiday season should be about spending valuable time with friends and family, not having to make a choice between food on the table or a child’s medication.
Ms Perry is urging communities across Perth to create joy this year by opening their hearts and supporting the 2023 Christmas Appeal.
“We want people to really engage in the spirit of giving,” she said.
“For those who are experiencing financial hardship, family separation, homelessness, or trauma, it can be a time of great distress and anxiety.
“Your generosity will once again help us to put food on tables, presents under trees and above all else, put a smile on the faces of children as they wake up on Christmas Day.
“You can make an even bigger difference by sharing our website donation link with your colleagues, networks, friends and family on social media.”
Ms Perry also urged Perth businesses looking to make a difference this festive season to join in the spirit of giving.
“If your business is in a position to give back to those families and individuals doing it tough, we would love to hear from you.
“Together, we can create positive memories for the families Communicare supports this Christmas”.
