Major boost for Bengali community

Jandakot MLA Yaz Mubarakai met with Bengali Association of Western Australia president Dr Ashis Roy last week.

The Bengali Association of Western Australia (BAWA) has been given a significant boost thanks to Lotterywest and the State Government.

The association, based in Canning Vale, received a Lotterywest grant of $8,596 for its upcoming Durga Puja festival.

Held from October 23 to 25, the annual event celebrates the Hindu mother-goddess Durga.

Over the past few months, the association has provided money – along with vouchers for groceries, chemist items, and flu vaccinations – to international students stranded in Perth.

Dr Roy would like to thank the association’s COVID team, its COVID fund donors, and the wider Bengali community for their efforts.

“We seek to bring people together and to improve the community’s well-being,” he said.

Jandakot MLA Yaz Mubarakai was pleased to present the Lotterywest grant to BAWA president Dr Ashis Roy on October 13.

Mr Mubarakai praised the association for supporting disheartened community members through these difficult times.

“When they are not planning wonderful cultural events like Durga Puja, the organisation does significant community work,” he said.

“Thank you, Dr Roy and BAWA, for your contribution to our community.”
