With Australia Day just a couple days away the members at the Serpentine Jarrahdale Men’s Shed have pulled together just in time to create two unique characters guaranteed to bring joy to any child’s face.

Dubbed Serpyroo and Mundi Koala the one-of-a-kind characters will be displayed at the Serpentine Sports Ground this Saturday as part of this year’s Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s Australia Day celebrations.

SJ Men’s Shed president Peter Cuttriss said the group enjoyed creating the two characters made from recycled plywood.

“We sourced a branch out of the bush for the koala to sit on and cleaned it up before attaching it to a stand,” he said.

“The kangaroo was made to look more cartoon-style with the cut out in the middle so children can stick their heads through to make it look like they are a joey coming out of the pouch.”

This Saturday’s Australia Day celebrations will kick off with a free barbecue breakfast from 7.30am followed by the annual citizenship and awards ceremony from 10am.

There will be plenty of activities for all attendees young and old, including an obstacle course, bouncy castle and water slides, entertainment by the Heritage Country Choir and Mucky Duck Bush Band, an equestrian demonstration and an array of classic cars on display by members of the Byford Classic Car Club.
